STATEMENT OF PURPOSES:
The purposes of this chapter shall be charitable, educational, historic, and patriotic, including, but not limited to, the following:
1: To revive, foster and promote Irish cultural events, interests and sentiments;
2: To collect and preserve Irish cultural traditions relating to any of the Irish peoples;
3: To encourage the study of the Irish language, history, literature, music and poetry;
4: To devote all net proceeds of chapter activities to charitable educational purposes;
5: To generally do and perform any and all acts and things which may be necessary or convenient for carrying out these purposes in a nonsectarian and nonpolitical manner.
This chapter is organized exclusively for charitable educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Notwithstanding any other provision of these Bylaws, The chapter shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on.
HISTORY:
The Sons and Daughters of Erin is an Irish heritage organization which was created in 1969. The first organizational meeting was held at the Holiday Hotel by the river. The decision was made to name us "Sons Of Erin Of Northern Nevada." Pat Brady was chosen the first President with Dinny Healy, Jr., Vice President and Gaelic Secretary. Charter members represented some of the more prominent Irishmen in the area: Jake Lawlor of the University of Nevada athletic and coaching fame; Ty Cobb, well known Journalist; Bob McDonald, attorney and Democratic Party politico; Charlie Springer, Nevada Supreme Court Justice; Bob Sullivan, Treasurer, prominent in Valley Bank of Nevada (now Bank of America); and about thirty-five other Irish enthusiasts. In 1996 the name was changed to The Sons and Daughters of Erin.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Over the years we have engaged in many community service projects including the planting of trees at St. Patrick's Grove in Rancho San Rafael; volunteering at the Reno National Championship Air Races, sponsoring a basketball team, founding the Sparks American Youth Soccer Organization, providing scholarships at all Washoe County High Schools; contributing to various community charitable organizations and sponsoring Irish entertainment.
ACTIVITIES:
We use every opportunity to promote the essence of Irish heritage, especially as it pertains to Northern Nevada. Each year we chose the Irishmen or Irishwoman of the year in conjunction with Fitzgerald's Hotel Casino. We join with the Clampers in dedication to the many Irish miners who were responsible for Virginia City and who helped to rebuild San Francisco. We have dedicated a monument at St. Patrick's Grove, Rancho San Rafael.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The qualifications for membership in our chapter are simple
1: You must be a person with at least a smidgen of
Irish Blood in
you or be the spouse or companion of such a person.
2: You must be willing to participate in and help with
our projects
(few of which require heavy commitments of time and effort ).
MEETINGS:
We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30 p.m. at the Sparks Elk's Lodge, 517 South Rock Boulevard, Sparks, Nevada. We try to have a program or presentation of general interest each meeting. Occasionally we will have food and we always try to have good conversation and sometimes a song or three. We have several special events during the year . We participate in Reno's Celtic New Year Celebration. Of course, our major event is The St. Patrick's Day celebration.
